Thematic clusters

The International Relations Program is divided into three thematic clusters. Students take 2.0 full-course equivalents (FCE), 1.0 FCE of which must be at the 400/500 level, in one of:

International political economy

Examine the evolution and function of international trade, financial, development and other global economic institutions and dynamics.

Security and strategy

Cover traditional military security threats as well as non-traditional security challenges such as trans-national terrorism, cyber operations, asymmetrical warfare, and threats to human security including lack of shelter, food, and the destructive effects of serious human rights abuses.

International institutions and governance

Examine the development and role of international organizations like the United Nations, NATO, and the African Union, the successes and failures of international law to regulate international relations and protect human rights, and the nature of different domestic governance models around the world

In addition, the international relations program is divided into six regional clusters: Students take 2.0 full-course equivalents (FCE), 1.0 FCE of which must be at the 400/500 level, in courses across the Faculty of Arts departments in:

North America - Asia/Pacific - Latin America - The Middle East & North Africa - Europe - Africa

Language and Statistics Requirement

Language

The International Relations program has a rigorous language requirement. Students must take either 12 units in a single language other than English or 6 units in each of two languages other than English.

Please note: Students should select a language of study that will assist them with their research on an understanding of the world. Culture courses offered in English by language departments cannot be used toward this requirement.

Statistics

In addition, the program also requires students to complete a statistics requirement.
