Why Communication, Media and Film?

How are culture and identity reflected in and shaped by Communication, Media and Film?

The Department of Communication, Media and Film offer two programs of study: Communication and Media Studies (COMS) and Film Studies (FILM).

Both programs aim to provide students with the specific skills, knowledge, and flexibility required to understand how images and messages communicate meaning, preparing them for a complex and rapidly changing world.

Communication and media studies

Study the impacts of new media, understand the importance of popular culture, analyze the significance of popular photography, among other topics. Graduates have gone on to prominent jobs in brand development and public relations; secured roles in arts-based companies and progressive start-ups. Many have gone on to complete graduate degrees in communication and media or professional degrees in law, education and medicine.

Take exciting classes that will allow you to understand the work of directors like Katherine Bigelow, Alfred Hitchcock, Terrence Malick, and Orson Welles.

Learn about diverse genres and film making practices, such as film noir, the French New Wave, documentary cinema, animation, and experimental film and video.

Graduates have gone on to study at prestigious MA programs and work for world-renowned film schools and international film festivals.

Our monthly colloquium presents new research and special interest topics in Humanities and Social Sciences. The events are free and open to the UCalgary community. A reception follows.

CanWest Global Lecture

Cinema Politica

Cinema Politica brings a series of social-issue and political films to a well-established audience over the past 15 years.

Formerly known as Movies That Matter, the series has delivered a monthly documentary film premieres, screening only the finest in inspiring and intelligent non-fiction cinema from across the globe. Each screening is followed by an engaging discussion, featuring the director of the film and/or someone from the community known for their expertise or insightful views on the subject.
